I couldn’t put my finger on it for the longest time. In fact not until this morning. I have met with thousands of advisors over the years. Many great advisors, who had a passion for serving people, who had a passion for the detail, who had a passion for…the process. This, in my opinion, is what sets apart the very successful advisors in today’s world. Matt Campbell the head football coach at Iowa State says it best “our culture says screw process it’s all about instant gratification.” He goes on to tell his team, “If you fall in love with the process, at some point, I don’t know when it will love you back.”
We see evidence of this so much in our industry today, advisors jumping from thing to thing, product to product, hot marketing idea to hot marketing idea. However, what I see from the most successful advisors is a process and a passion for that process that they can take out to the world to serve others. They continually put themselves in a position to share this passion and eventually, if they have enough discipline and continue to focus on the details the process loves them back.
I am sure you have all heard the phrase before, simple but not easy, and this concept is no different. With the number of distractions we have in this world and in our industry, it is easy to get distracted from your process. I encourage you to stay the course, stay with what got you here and while things around you may change from time to time, the process always wins.
